I’ve photographed several life events for the Armbusters; one of the daughter’s weddings, family portraits, multi-generational family portraits. I’ve known them for quite some years and have loved being a part of their family keepsakes. So I was quite excited when Justin & Elizabeth told me they had a little spitfire that was ready for some camera action. And boy was she! We had a fun day at the beach with shoe swaps, beach sand and giggles. I’m glad I got to enjoy a day with them. And seriously, who doesn’t love kids at this age!

Purples highlighted a gorgeous day at L’Auberge Del Mar

L’Auberge is one of the most delightful venues here in San Diego. The outdoor seating allows for a perfect Southern California wedding experience and lets decor really shine. As this was illustrated beautifully by Botanica of San Diego with magnificent arrangements highlighted by purple shaded accents. Ashley wore a lovely Somsi dress from the Bustle in Del Mar which fit her sassy personality well. I loved the use of the red wagon for the flower girls & ring bearer to hustle the group of munchkins into the ceremony! I could barely contain myself during the family portraits, as one of the flower girls wiggled away right in front of the last shot screaming. Quite funny! L’Auberge did an amazing job as always. And a spectacular sunset dinner closed out the night as grins filled the air and yummy cake was devoured by all.

Getting to be apart of the rehearsal can be such a blast! The rehearsal is the beginning, the start of the anticipation and event, the joy of all being together in a tighter group. I get to see family dynamics and who’s interacting with who, or “the big players”. It sets the mood for the next day. Ashley & Jason started off at Sea Grove Park for their rehearsal and then had dinner at the delish restaurant across the street Il Fornaio. Sunflowers, polka dots and scrumptious food circulated as family and friends enjoyed having a final moment with the bride and groom. Plenty of toasts and songs filled the air, finished off with lots of laughter.

Beautiful Outdoor Wedding at Rancho Valencia – Kimberly & Adam

It always feels like a warmer introduction when I’ve photographed another sibling’s wedding in the family. There’s a familiarity in the air. So I was ecstatic to hear from Kimberly & Adam for whom I photographed her older sister, Katherine’s wedding. Not to mention, Rancho Valencia always dazzles in photographs. Kimberly put together a delightful event with lots of tantalizing details and decor. Walnut Paperie added beautiful touches with witty and fun stationary, signage and cards. Adrianne Smith did a superb job of setting the mood with soft pinks and green florals. Kim looked stunning in her Oscar De La Renta dress as she twirled on the dance floor with Adam. String lights, sparklers and an alternative dessert (ice cream sammies & doughnuts – YUM!!) made for a memorable evening on the grass under the stars. Congratulations again to Kim & Adam – Thanks for letting me be a part of your day!

Styled or Vintage Photography or is it the Printing?

It used to be that wedding photos were pretty much a what you see is what you get proposition. We processed film, the pictures were printed with straight-forward color and brightness. Boom, done. These days however, wedding photos have been given a lot more attention with fun processing and crazy color and texture treatments (in part) because of the amazing Photoshop & Lightroom actions now available. We seem them all over wedding blogs and websites and they end up on our Pinterest boards because of the vibrant color that matched our inspiration boards. How do you get that for YOUR images you wonder?

I realized it was high time I did a blog post about processing and treatments. You see, the idea seems to be prevalent that the actual picture taking is responsible for the “look” of an image. Although this idea might be correct when it comes to “styled props”…. in reality a photo can be given a plethora of different looks and treatments. Each effect will change greatly the mood and style an image projects.

I’ve recently added a section to my website with some treatment samples. This is a work in progress, so check back now and then for more samples.

Riviera Country Club – Pacific Palisades – Arianne & Brandon

Anytime I have to drive more than an hour to a wedding I consider it a destination wedding. Arianne & Brandaon’s wedding was a good 2+ hour drive so I made a weekend out of it by staying with my good friend and lovely assistant Jen Rau.

Riviera Country Club was beautiful and had the prettiest sunset just in time for cocktail hour. I wish it were a hotel, I would have loved to stay there. Arianne and Brandon were good sports and let me drag them all over the property, not so easy for a bride in a big dress and very high heels! Thanks everyone!

Adrianne is one of my dear friends and the owner of Adrianne Smith Floral Design in Encinitas. She does stunning, earthy, organic floral design for weddings, parties, charity events. We ran into each other at a wedding about 8 years ago and have been friends pretty much ever since. Well, Adrianne needed a new photo for her website and of course a little photo shoot complete with a little bubbly, snacks and friends ensued. Adrianne is super picky about what she looks like in photos (aren’t we ALL!)… so leave a comment and tell her how amazing she looks.

This was a lovely day in La Jolla (San Diego, CA) at a stunning location. I always love photographing at this hotel, Leo and Victor in catering are so sweet and so is the entire staff. This landmark location was used in a fun way for Michelle and Jeremy’s wedding. Instead of using the ballroom they used the restaurant and the adjoining patio. I love events set up this way, the patio always photographs so beautifully.

Pretty Little Yellow Sunflower Rehearsal – La Jolla, California

I love rehearsal parties! The stress of the actual wedding day is not quite present yet, pretty yet simple decor abounds and the wine (or signature cocktail) flows.

This day it was Michelle & Jeremy’s turn and their lovely soiree was held at Brockton Villa in La Jolla, California. Their food is great, their view is even better and their service… yes, you guessed it, to die for.

Mid-week Wedding of Vera & Aleks

Vera & Aleks are both 4th year students at UCSD, both are entering the medical field and both want to put their degrees to use helping those less fortunate then themselves. The are both equally dedicated to their religion as well. The fact that they met in a coffee shop here in San Diego yet are both from practically the same town in Ukraine wasn’t lost on them either. This is one amazing couple who seem destined to end up together. Seeing them together and their love for each other leaves no doubts. I just can’t wait to photograph their beautiful babies some day! It also didn’t hurt that they had a 2-hour wedding on a weekday…. so refreshing for me to have a little change of pace.
